The answer to your first question is the 5 up means 5kc's, which means if you were at 145.150,the 5up switch would make it 145.155. The display will read like this say you were on 145.150 Mhz, the display will be 5.15 No this radio does not have a backup battery for the memory (bummer) Oh well at the time I bought mine it was the best thing on the market ...hehe, Gee how things change. [deletions] : All recent mods have been done by Ten-Tec. They should have improved : the hiss problem somewhat, although I never heard the radio before : the mods were done. Okay, but if your radio is an OMNI V, do be sure they did the one mentioned in *QST*'s OMNI V review (Nov 1990 *QST*, p 33) under the Rough Edges subhead. That one, "incorporated into all production units since the spring of 1990," bears directly on just the type of hiss you mention. That said, any radio that has wideband IF amplifiers after all of its signal-width selectivity and includes no audio rolloff is going to serve up some wideband IF hiss. My little old TS-130V, all of the signal-width selectivity of which comes from a single 8830-kHz filter, exemplifies this exactly. A bit of audio rolloff can help; a "tail end" IF filter"--after the AGC-detector pickoff point but before the product detector--is a good solution, issues of complexity, filter loss and group delay aside. An image-reject product detector is another neat idea. The state of the art is there, but the economics aren't. 6m is a 'born again' band, and it's gonna be a couple years before the manufacturers figure out that maybe someone would want 50w on 50MHz at the touch of a button. I remember some great 2m rigs that only had 10w, now 45-50w is the norm, and Icom has the 736, 100w on 6m. I'm currently working on a 200w amp, 10w in for just such a radio, my Icom 726. I've found that for Es SSB, you really need at least 50w or be working from a rare grid ;-). The local 6m repeater is behind quite a few hills from me, I don't expext to use it unless I have a 100w or so. > > I guess I didn't realize running 30 watts was considered an irrational > lust for power these days :-) > You just want something to keep your feet warm this winter ;-) Galen, KF0YJ ------------------------------ Date: 25 Oct 1994 09:19:01 GMT From: bobw@col.hp.com (Bob Witte) References<37tr88$292@sulawesi.lerc.nasa.gov> <782593738snz@g8sjp.demon.co.uk>,<384fjs$3pn@hp-col.col.hp.com>, Subject: Re: Alinco 6M FM pouelle@uoft02.utoledo.edu wrote: : Ok all you more watts the better people - relax and engage your brains. : I have run 5 watts or less with a 5/8 wave ground plane on 2m with good : results - 40 miles regularly into a decent repeater, and it gets out well : enough for simplex - especially when I use a 5 element beam. I would : suspect that 10W for 6m FM would be useable for modest local communication : when the band is not open and overkill (sometimes) when it is. The original comment that I made concerning a recently introduced 10Watt 6M FM rig was basically meant to say "gee, the state of the art is such that providing something greater than 10 watts at 50 MHz should not be a problem" (i.e. it should not increase the cost of the radio substantially). Yes, gain antennas are very valuable. You can *even* use them when you are running greater than 10 watts and radiate an even stronger signal. Yes, I can hit the local repeater with less than 10 watts. Yes, there are QSOs to be made on 6M with less than 10W.
